City status will boost arrivals in Victoria Falls
Senator Angeline Tongogara has thrown her weight behind the motion to confer Victoria Falls Municipality with a city status.
The Senator said if Victoria Falls becomes a city, it will help to boost arrivals in the town.
Victoria Falls is arguably the major tourist attraction in Zimbabwe the municipality has been angling for an upgrade in status.
Speaking during debate on the motion in the Senate, Honourable Tongogara said the status was long overdue.
“I would like to thank the Honourable Minister (July Moyo) for moving the motion in this House. If Victoria Falls gets city status this will actually boost incoming of tourists into our country, hence our economy will improve.
“A lot of people will be coming into the country, because it is a city, it will attract quite a number of people. I would like to thank you Honourable Minister.
“This application for Victoria Falls to be upgraded to a city was done in 2017 and it was passed in 2018, now we are in 2020 – finally, it has been made a dream come true.
“They say it is better to be late than to miss totally. I support this motion that Victoria Falls gets city status,” she said.
The falls which were named after Queen Victoria of England by the late David Livingstone are regarded as one of the 7th wonders of the world.
Victoria Falls Town has many hotels in the country compared to any city or town.
Some of the hotels include Elephant Hills Hotel, Azambezi, Victoria Falls Hotel, Kingdom Hotel, Victoria Falls River Lodge, Rainbow Victoria Falls, Cresta Sprayview, Ilala Lodge and Matetsi Lodge among many others.
Recently, the government opened the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange which trades in United States Dollars.
The move is meant to attract foreign investors to the town which is also a Special Economic Zone.
