The new and enhanced Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) notes, set to be released to market, reflect a strong tourism statement by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), featuring Big Five wildlife and Big Five landscapes on the front and back.
The new notes are set to enter circulation on the 7th of April, replacing the notes that are currently in use.
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is going to release the ZiG notes in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200.
The ZiG10 features the Matopo Hills on the front motif and a buffalo on the back motif.
The ZiG20 features the new Parliament building on the front and an elephant on the back.
The ZiG50 features Kariba Dam on the front motif and a rhinoceros on the back motif.
The ZiG100 features Victoria Falls on the front motif and a leopard on the back motif.
The ZiG200 features the Great Zimbabwe Ruins on the front motif and a lion on the back motif.
According to Moris Mpofu, the Chief of Staff in the Office of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the landmarks on the front motifs of the notes showcase Zimbabwe’s symbolic heritage and natural endowments.
Speaking to legislators recently, Mpofu said ‘’Each note’s design is inspired by Zimbabwe’s unique heritage, culture, iconic landscapes and rich wildlife and highlights the spirit of its people.
‘’The new Zig currency series visually express Zimbabwe’s country image through the big five in animals and landscapes. Natural identity in the new Zig series is about showing how the new banknotes become a shared story for Zimbabweans.
‘’The upgraded Zig banknotes have real life motifs which have been carefully selected to reflect the Zimbabwean culture, values and diversity,’’ he said.
The Big Five animals are among the leading tourist attractions in Zimbabwe, and this could make the banknotes worthy souvenirs for tourists interested in safari tourism.
