Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona has revealed that the much awaited Road Traffic Insurance Fund Bill is still being drafted by the Attorney General’s Office.
Road Traffic Insurance Fund once enacted will go a long way in assisting road traffic accident victims.
The Bill that will establish the fund, has been long coming, which prompted Senate Annah Shiri to check on progress.
In his response, Minister Mhona indicated that once drafting has been completed, the Bill will be taken to Cabinet before coming to Parliament.
‘’In Zimbabwe, as a nation, we have had several road traffic accidents and deaths caused by it. We urge those in the august House and the nation at large to drive carefully.
‘’The Vision of President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa, is that we must have a fund that would alleviate the burden on those who have lost their relatives due to road traffic accidents.
‘’Therefore, we came up with a Bill that we are driving as the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and we have done public hearings.We are working with the Attorney General’s Office and they are still drafting, once they complete the drafting, we will take it to Cabinet.
‘’Once that one is done, the Bill will be brought before the Parliament and debated. I would want to promise you that before the end of this session, we will have come up with such an Act to assist the people of Zimbabwe,’’ he said.
Zimbabwe has in the past years seen a lot of people lose their lives or property, or get injured through accidents.
However, most of them struggled to get help to cover medical bills or compansation for the injuries they suffered, and this makes the establishment of the fund, a step in the right direction.
Zimbabwe will not be the first country to establish the Fund, as several countries in both Africa and outside have a similar fund.
In an effort to try and reduce accidents, the government has been dualising some of the country’s roads, while rehabilitating some of them altogether.
